We wrote Just Like You in response to a newspaper report about a cult in the USA that claimed to have successfully created the first human. The song considers what it might be like for some teenage girl to wake up one morning to be told that she is in fact the first non-unique human being. The song is Jamie’s with Eve’s usual lyrical advice. We spent a long time doing a quite complex demo before taking it up to the Goat Shed. There’s quite a lot of doubling - the vocal line is sung in octaves - and most of the percussion track is echoed. Evelyn also learned to sing the words and tune of the line ‘Just Like You’ backwards, literally ‘ouy ekil tsuj’ which we then recorded and played forward again on part of the finished track - the words are clearly distinguishable for what they are, but they have a slighly warped and unnatural feel. It’s a track we’re all proud of.
just like you
I’m just a simple girl
My life man-made.
I’m one
of kind
Or so they say
But I’m the image of you
A mirror-maid
I’m
just like you
I’m just like you.
O, I don’t want to go
I don’t
want to fade
I’m not a memory
You can wipe away
Can’t put me back in
the box
I’m here to stay
I’m just like you
I’m just like
you.
You became a God
In your image I was made
A life born of
self-love
But you weren’t born again
Just want to be who I am
But I
remain
Just like you
Just like you.
