The earliest song on the album by some distance, written by Jamie in 1999. The arrangement is largely down to Andy and contains our only use, so far, of brass. The chord sequence and rhythm is one we used for part of the music we wrote and recorded for a stage production of ‘Twelfth Night’ in 2000. It’s the only truly ‘narrative’ song on the album - which is just one of the many ways it shows its age!
some days are like this
There's sun and lightning
in the room that's next to
mine,
And while he's throwing thunderbolts
you still contrive to shine.
Do
you think that I don't notice
the cuts and bruises round your
eyes,
The cigarette-burn tattoos
that your make-up just can't hide.
Some days are like this...
A lamb goes to the slaughter
with far more fuss than
you
Suffering in silence while he
beats you black and blue
And
when I ask you,
if I press you hard enough,
You
say it's nothing -
just his way of showing love.
Remember you once told me
that things get better when we
die?
I thought that you were joking,
that it was just a silly
lie.
But now I'm older and
I can feel your bitter
fear
I've learnt to see the truth
in every desperate tear.
